MS has produced a fix (2 KB patches) that you cannot ordinarily get to without an update. For error code 800B0100 it was recommended that I install the system update readiness tool. In most cases only the first (KB3172605) of these is needed. I believe either of the solutions that requires restart and a matter of minutes had fixed my problem, so a great thanks to this guide VG! It shows 0x80080005 error. All the junk on line about windows updates and nothing fixes anything, but your plan did, time and time again. Works with June rollup too, but it was replaced by the July one.

btw, the KBs listed in the post above are all for Windows Update Client, last one being the latest. Windows 8.1 Won't Update Kudos to the author of this tutorial. I was able to get the bad install resolved and it still hung up on the checking.

MIcrosoft really flopped on this one.

I had to turn off Windows Update service each time BEFORE I started the standalone updates. had to do fresh install windows several times but failed to update… your guide was excellent and most of all simple.. I did everything you said step by step and BAM!!!!!! But that's for a different reason. All of these changes are done automatically in the background.
